SENDING OUT OUR LOVE. We first devoted this section of our WAS site to the Tsunami people, and next came Katrina
the problems of humanity in Africa, the earthquake in Pakistan and many other challenges... the Myanmar (Burma) cyclone ...and the Earthquake in China, not to mention the disasters in Africa involving millions of people. A Typhoon hit the Philippines and is now moving south through Taiwan and Viet Nam (tropical storm but still destructive). 240 people were killed in Philippines. Keep in mind foremost and above all that God Love heals everything. Jesus knew this and practiced it...and He proved that it works...and it is proven to work today. Jesus actually controlled the weather, calming down a storm. He said: "I will be with thee alway." The Christ Spirit is here now. This is all "Big Medicine." And, Jesus also knew that prayer works. He prayed often. No matter what the bad situation, He went immediately to God. He knew that was uppermost. He knew that God was there and would help...if He was recognized...and there was faith in Him...faith as a tiny mustard seed. Other religions have great ways to help with their faith also. We send our Love to all dealing with natural and man made problems whatever they may be, earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, tsunamis, (recently mine disasters), economic disaters, etc., to families and friends, workers, medical people, aid people and everyone involved. Cultures are different and that's great, but people are brothers and sisters. We know you are dealing with much...and send all the good thoughts. You have many good friends around the world.

DISASTER NEWS
EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI.  This quake just hit the poor nation with terrific force.  What they need right now is basic food and water and help digging people out of the debris.  The U.S. has mobilized its help resources.  I hope that the Pentagon's Operation's Branch (G-4 -- the planners) is involved instead of the last Katrina bunch.   I'm thinking about the great help thinkers we know.  Dr. George Washington Carver is one we always consult first even though he has passed away.  He saved poor farmers of the southern U.S.  He delt mostly with agriculture - improving soil with crop rotation plowing under the nitrogen producing peanut plant and getting organic matter into the soil.  He promoted sweet potatoes.  They are very nutritious.  He and his students would go around to little farms with his Jessup Wagon (donated by a man out east named Jessup) with demonstration items - a classroom on wheels. But there was something that Carver did that I haven't seen any other help organizations do and that is go inside the little impoverished houses and check to see if the housewife had nice curtains.  There is more to life than just basic food and clothing.  One has to think of the well being of the impoverished spirit.  He knew all about the impoverished spirit.  The poor tenant farmers (both black and white) of the south were still trying to revover from the massive destruction of The Civil War in Carver's day.  The slaves were freed, but this caused a tremendous social upheaval. Carver himself was born a slave during the Civil War. He knew the down-trodden situation. He also knew about basic economics.  Besides getting basic agriculture in shape, he did a highly advanced thing. He plunged into diversification, inventing new products with what they had.  Hence, look at all the products he created from the peanut. It was spectacular.  When he went into his lab, he was thinking creatively, however, he really gave credit for the creativity to God.  He turned to God first.  Unfortunately, there is much human corruption in Haiti. Carver was very peaceful.  One of his writing friends was Ghandi.  But, eventually, Haiti is going to have to have a major change.  Right now though, again, Haiti needs basic help immediately.  We have listed in this section the Red Cross and some other help organizations that need financial contributions and maybe basic items (be sure and check first). I just heard that the White House site has some help information.  The good ole' USA always helps but this situation is so gigantic that it will be a real strain on resources - especially when we are having to shoulder most of the fighting of the grissle brained terrorists (who think we are so bad!).  Shows who really cares about helping people.  There is an old biblical saying: "Ye shall know them by their works" (entered 13 Jan, 2010 - RM).
Much tornado destruction and death here in southwest Missouri, northeast Oklahoma and Arkansas of the USA. A big tornado tore through Picher (pronounced Pitcher), Oklahoma, came across the state line into Missouri, hit Seneca hard and nearby Newtonia. Newtonia is the little town that is the site for the Ritchey Mansion, in the middle of two Civil War battles (Indians first saw action in Civil War here). The Mansion was hit hard with roof damage and toppling of the chimney. I recall a lot of big trees thereabouts. The whole town was hit. This little town has been described as being about the same now as it was in the Civil War. If anyone would like to help, contact Newtonia Battlefields Protection Association, Inc, General Delivery, Newtonia, Mo 64853. Lots of personal attachment here, as Ron's Great Great Grandfather, Mathew Ritchey built the mansion. It's a grand ole' place, fortunately being preserved by the Association. We send our love and thoughts to all those suffering from the tornado - all the way from Okla into Barry Co., Missouri.
Valuable papers from the Picher tornado have been found floating down as far away as Springfield, Mo. The Springdield News-Leader is running pics and papers on their web site - www.newsleader.com. Check to identify. All not identified will eventually go to the Springfield, Historical Museum for archiving...people will be able to check far into future. This museum is on north Boonville across from the courthouse.
We had a lot of wind here in Hollister with downed trees and roof and out bldg damage at our old home in town. This is where Dad designed and made the big figures for the Branson Adoration Scene lighting, held each year.  (this item is now a couple of years old, but will leave up a while longer ).
Since posting the above there have been many other tornados around the U.S. We wonder how much of this is man made? If it is, then, governmental leaders are responsible for allowing causes.

Our thoughts of hope also to all the people suffering from the earthquake in central China...and also the cyclone that hit Myanmar (old Burma). We here at the WAS would be glad to help in any coordination and mediation way as we are interested in all countries and cultures. We care about the ancient and modern. Archaeology and anthropology are respected universally. Most people of the world are living almost on top of their antiquity, their ancient roots and great memories of their ancestors. We greatly respect all this and present feelings.
Many structures that collapsed are said to have been badly built. Again, this is the responsibility of government to oversee construction correctly.

HOPE. Also, don't forget that there is always Hope. This section has a story about the little fairy Hope, the little character out of Greek mythology. Keep scrolling down and you will find it...."Asklepios and the Tsunami." Hope is always around where there is much discouragement. Hope makes Polyanna look like an amateur. Hope is truly a bright, golden, helpful light. This little character took over in a story of mine about Asklepios much as the character Sacajawea in the Lewis and Clark section of this web site. This writing has led to still another story about how Hope was born and ran (a series of three) in my weekly column.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - We here in the U.S. never know when something such as an earthquake will hit us. The tsunami earthquake makes us think much about this. Only 200 miles east from our WAS office is a monster - the New Madrid Fault. It runs all the way from the state of Illinois down through the boot heel of Missouri and then on down into the state of Arkansas. The city of Memphis, Tenn. (with a large population) is very close to it. This is the fault that kicked off through 1811-1812 with at least three 8 point quakes in quick succession followed all winter with powerful aftershocks. It was so powerful that it caused the mighty Mississippi River to flow backwards. Fortunately, there wasn't much population at the time - just a little settlement at the bootheel, and some native Americans about. It was a terrible series and shook church bells in the northeast U.S.
Working on archaeological digs and surveys in our area here with the U. of Missouri we found massive slabs of limestone that had fallen from ceilings of bluff- shelters (semi-caves). Dr. Carl Chapman theorized that these were shaken loose during the quakes. Seismologists today detect little quivers on their dials. It is sleeping but fitfully. It could go off any time.
If it should go off in a big way, there are transcontinental gas pipe lines running right across it, from the southern U.S. all the way to the northeast U.S.
It would wreck much for quite a while.
I hope someone is reminding our President about this.
We could easily be next. Ron (first written shortly after the Tsunami of S/E Asia - with some little additions along the way up to the latest 10/16/2006.

ECONOMIC DISASTER. This man-made form of disaster is just as vicious as any of the other disasters...and caused totally by Man! It wrecks much havoc and hurt. Character breakdown, uncontrolled greed, flawed systems (cooked up by man) are the cause. Darwinian economics doesn't work. Whatever the system if it hurts people it's bad. The whole idea of society in the first place is to protect the free people. Even the most primitive of societies protects its people. What happens is that the big blob up above becomes the ruler (instead of the people). Good examples of these blobs here in the U.S. are Pharmaceutical Cos., Insurance Cos., and the Medical Industry. Also add food industry. They are needed...but not out of control. Their costs to public need to be cut in half. But this probably won't happen because our "leaders" in Washington are ruled by these "blobs"...controlling, dominating dinosaurs. It's not democracy. Too bad. It's a new form of mega-corporate dictatorship. It's just as bad as any dictatorship of old Rome. When that happened the people of Rome couldn't free themselves; they lost their power that they once had in the Republic of Rome. The only possible remedy in the U.S. is to have some kind of a referendum of people; throw out the present batch and commence all over again. All the biggies will only go out kicking and screaming. HELPFUL SPIRITUAL THOUGHTS -

There is one thing that everyone can do to help the tsunami people and all the helpers and families and all others and that is pray. Prayer is very powerful. Jesus prayed often, but the only prayer of His that has come down to us is "The Lord's Prayer." This is the old standby.

The Lord's Prayer

"Our Father which art in heaven,
Hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver
us from evil;
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the
glory, forever.
Jesus Christ

Following are a couple of quotes from article "The Tsunami of S. Asia and the Spirit that Comforts the World"
(appearing on www.spirituality.com).

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, will not we fear though the waters thereof roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with the swelling thereof...There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God, the holy places of the tabernacles of the most High. God is in the midst of her; she shall not be moved." Psalms

Once I was working in a museum, and I met a husband and wife - Rev. and Mrs. Berg - who were looking around at the exhibits. We got to talking, and I learned that they were Assembly of God missionaries just back from Africa. He gave me his card and on the card was a saying that he pointed out; he emphatically wanted me to know about it. The saying was:
"You will derive a great deal of satisfaction if you
look cheerfully on the dark side of life."
That sounds almost impossible to do sometimes, but he was very emphatic about it. I have a hunch he was in the middle of some very miserable situations in Africa, and this saying worked. So, I will pass along to readers of this site.

While looking in the used book section of the gift shop of the Springfield, Mo. Library, a title caught my eye. "Crossing the Threshold of Hope," by John Paul II. I bought it, and am very glad I did. A journalist had asked him 20 questions about the church and Christianity in general, and the Pope had answered every one very straight forward. These were very tough questions. The answers made up the book. It is an amazing little book with much that applies to the tsunami disaster.
In the chapter on Why is There so Much Evil in the World?" He tells about "Stat Crux Dum Volvitur Orbis (The Cross remains constant while the world turns).
He elaborates much in the book about Christ's admonition "to not be afraid." Christ says this a number of times. He would calm them down. The one He didn't say this to was his mother Mary; obviously, she was unafraid.
Incidentally, if you have ever wondered about some beliefs of the Catholic church, this explains it all from the Pope himself, a very learned man (he will probably go down in history as one of the most famous, if not The most famous of Popes). Fascinating reading. Many sterreotypes go down in flames.

FIGHTING GLOBAL WARMING
Whatever the cause, global warming is enveloping the globe and we need to fight it in every way possible. I know personally that global warming has been encroaching for at least 60 years. Here in the southwest Missouri Ozarks we have seen the invasion of Armadillos and Road Runners from the southwest U.S. One of our crew members on a Mizzou archaeological dig reported the first Road Runner sighting in Missouri back around 1956. Then, I noticed that it became harder and harder to put out a fall garden
(planted in mid-summer); it was just too hot. I couldn't figure it out...but now we know...global warming.
Besides fighting the causes of global warming, we need to throw up barricades and reinforce the global fort. We need to be doing these things anyway.
First, teachings of the late Dr. William Albrecht noted soils scientist of Missouri Univ. needs to be studied. Among other things pertinent to the problem, Dr. Albrecht noted in class that rich soil is granular soil (containing much organic material), and this rich granular soil holds water. Also, clay particles - the finest of the soils particles - usually found down in the sub soil - also is a water holder. So, don't be discouraged if you have a lot of clay. Put it to work for you.
Haul in the organic material to build up that "granular soil." George Washington Carver and his students did this first thing at Tuskegee. This organic matter enriches the soil in many ways.
Remember, soil is basic. Actually, rock is even more basic. Dr. Albrecht often repeated the profound old biblical quote: "Look ye unto the rock from whence ye are hewn." Of course, this has a pertinent theological meaning, but is also applied to soils science for tiny rock particles make soil. This quote wouldn't make a bad motto for the global warming battle.
We can also get much help from the ancients. The Petra inhabitants were geniuses at saving water. The Israelis have done research on this.
The Asians and Incas knew how to make great terraces. This conserves soil from washing away and also holds water.
It's going to get hotter and dryer, so, we've got to conserve that water.
Speaking of soil, it would be a good idea to check out the semi-subterranean lodges of the Arikira, Mandan and Hidatsa. Earth is a great insulator from the heat...and cold. Caves are cool. There's a ratio of coolness in a cave depending on how hot it is outside...the average temperature if I'm not mistaken. Here, the temperature of a cave is around 55.
Entered Oct. 26, 2007 - RM
INVISIBLE WATER!!!!
Yes, believe it or not, sometimes there is more water there in the ground than you might think. The Ozarks farmers, when I was a kid, planted fields of tomatoes on rocky hillsides - a sea of rocks. People asked, "how can the tomatoes grow in all those rocks?" Mom said, those rocks acted as mulch; often there is a little bit of moisture that collects on the underside of the rocks.
So, mulch is a great moisture collector; pile it on around plants. Just simple grass clippings, leaves and sometimes, papers, plastic or cloth of some kind can be used (be sure and make slits so that when it does rain, water can get down below).
Boy Scouts know how to make water collectors in the soil, water you can actually drink. Water comes up, then falls back down into a collector.
If this global warming thing continues, the water table way down there in the ground, will continue to drop. Cities and landowners will have to drill deeper wells. However, there is a good chance that there is still some moisture in the ground trying to work its way up to the surface.
Before drilling, be sure and check with the state's Dept. of Natural Resources for permits, etc.

Hope.jpgASKLEPIOS & THE TSUNAMI

The following story ran in the Branson (Missouri) Daily News, Tues., Jan. 11th, '05.The reader is getting a sneak preview.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
It is a little known fact, but the healers of Mount Pelion in Greece were the first on the scene after the tsunami disaster. Through my work in archaeology and with help of some old excavation friends in that area I have been able to piece together the story and pass along to the reader.
This may seem fantastic, but it is true. the old healers of the ancient Pantheon of the Gods in Greece managed to survive to this very day...Asklepios the healing god himself, Khieron the strange half man half horse another healer, Bolt the guard dog of Khieron and all his helper dogs from the 100 temples of Asklepios "Asklepions" - all known to be very healing - and the tiny healing fairy Hope surrounded by a golden glo and all her little helpers "the Hopefuls" each surrounded by a silver glo. Also present were the striking daughters of Asklepios in their long white gowns - Health, Allcure, Healing, Panacea and Hygieia. All have lived on! True, they were crowded out by much of civilization, but they just moved to Khieron's farm home at the foot of Mt. Pelion in Greece and here weathered the ages. This is where Asklepios grew up when he was left in the wilderness as a baby.
Hermes the messenger god was the first to learn of the tsunami. Quick as a blink he relayed the news to Zeus on Mount Olympus, who called in Apollo the overall god of healing. Hera the statuesque goddess of the earth, wife of Zeus was standing by her husband who was seated on his throne of gold and ivory. The bearded ruler of the Pantheon studied the dispatch and without hesitation proclaimed: "We must act quickly. Hermes, I know you are tired, the hardest working of all the gods, but you must rush to the foot of Mount Pelion and have Asklepios and all his healers quickly go to the scenes of disaster in the Ring of Fire area in the Indian Ocean."
Hermes quickly told Asklepios, who called together his group of healers. Bearded Asklepios, with a golden band around his head, and wearing a linen tunic with a robe and holding his famous staff with the intwined snake, stood in front of the group and spoke:
"Dear friends, we must quickly be on our way; we have much work to do. Yes, little Hope I see you are here with all your little Hopefuls. I'm counting on you people. I'm always thankful that Pandora, after opening her box and letting out all the miserable evils on the world and slamming the lid shut, finally heard your pleas down in the box and let you out."
Hope stood only one foot tall and wore a tunic of gold. She wore a narrow band of gold on her head. "You can count on us!" she said enthusiatically, "There is always Hope...Me!"
"And, good guard dog Bolt, I see you have all your helper guard dogs from the 100 Asklepions in Greece. You all are very healing and I know will be of much help."
Bolt and his friends barked enthusiastically "woof, woof, woof."
And, trusty Kheiron; your strength dear friend will be greatly needed."
Kheiron pawed the ground with his sharp hooves...all ready to go. "I hope I don't scare those poor people; they have been scared enough."
"You will do just fine. As soon as they see what a great helper you are, everything will be alright..."
"And, my wonderful daughters, Health, Allcure, Healing, Panacea and Hygieia; you are just what the doctor ordered!"
"Now, let us all be on our way!"
The healing group of Mt. Pelion then shot into the air and raced to help the victims of the tsunami.
Hope went about comforting the injured.
"Hang on dear friends; there is ALWAYS hope. The healers will be here shortly. I am going to leave with you one of the strong comforting dogs of the Asklepion to take care of you for a little while." Then, in a blur of golden light Hope flew to the next victims.
Some little Hopefuls, who wore silver clothes, tied a strong rope to Khieron and pulled debris off of victims.
Asklepios went from one victim to the other; healing all.
"I haven't lost my touch all these years," the kindly physician god said to a little silver Hopeful hovering over his shoulder...'
"Here, Hopeful, hold both hands on this compress."
The daughters of Asklepios had their hands full rushing around helping the thousands of injured and bewildered folks. They cleaned things up, saw that there were plenty of pharmaceuticals, were overseers of the healing process, saw to every need and did a Herculean job.
Finally, when Asklepios determined that things were under control, he ordered his group to return to the foot of Mount Pelion for a much needed rest. All hoped that there would not be another disaster soon. Ron Miller

DR. GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER TO THE RESCUE OF ALL PEOPLE OF THE EARTH WHO ARE HAVING A HARD TIME FEEDING THEMSELVES, MAKING A LIVING AND IN GENERAL JUST GETTING ALONG.

CARVER AND BOOKER T. WASHINGTON OF TUSKEGEE INSTITUTE IN ALABAMA SAVED MUCH OF THE SOUTHERN U.S. THIS LAND WAS A DISASTER AREA AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. THE SLAVES WERE FREED AND THEY WERE TRYING TO MAKE A GO OF IT ON LITTLE FARMS AS WERE WHITE TENANT FARMERS. THEY DIDN'T KNOW BASIC HYGIENE.
AND TO ADD TO THE PROBLEMS, THE BOLL WEEVLE CAME ALONG AND DESTROYED THE MAIN CASH CROP COTTON. SOIL HAD TO BE BUILT UP, NEW CROPS TRIED, PEOPLE HAD TO BE BUILT UP. CARVER AND WASHINGTON HAD A NEAT IDEA...THE JESSUP EDUCATIONAL WAGON.
THIS WAS AN EDUCATIONAL MASTERPIECE....WITH PRACTICAL EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION ON HOW TO PRESERVE FOODS, AND GROW THINGS AND INFORMATION ON HYGIENE....THE BASICS.
CARVER WAS REALLY AN EDUCATIONAL GENIUS. YOU HEAR A LOT
ABOUT HIS WORK WITH THE PEANUT. IT WAS A GREAT SOILS BUILDER, BUT ALSO MANY DIVERSIVIED PRODUCTS COULD BE MADE FROM IT. THIS BUILT UP THE ECONOMY. CARVER WAS ALSO A GIFTED TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM ALSO.
TODAY, AN INTERESTING EDUCATIONAL THING IS TAKING PLACE AT THE CARVER NATIONAL MONUMENT AT DIAMOND, MISSOURI WHERE THE GREAT SCIENTIST/EDUCATION WAS BORN. THE CENTER IS SHOWING TEACHERS AND STUDENTS HOW CARVER, WITH HIS HANDS ON TEACHING METHODS, CAN IMPROVE TEST SCORES IN THE CLASSROOM.
OVER 40 SCHOOL DISTRICTS HERE IN MISSOURI ARE APPLYING HIS METHODS AND TEST SCORES ARE IMPROVING GREATLY IN MATH AND SCIENCE. THE ANSWER TO ALL EDUCATORS DREAMS.
AND, OF COURSE, AFRICA AND OTHER PLACES TODAY NEED DR. CARVER BADLY. I'M CONVINCED CARVER IS THE ANSWER. THE WORLD JUST CAN'T STUDY AND APPLY DR. CARVER'S METHODS.
ENOUGH.
FOR INFORMATION ON HOW GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER CAN HELP THE GLOBE TODAY, CONTACT RANGER LANA HENRY, THE CHIEF RANGER AT THE GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER NATIONAL PARK, DIAMOND, MISSOURI. TELL HER RON MILLER SENT YOU. LANA HAS BEEN LEADING THE WAY ON ALL THIS AND DESERVES A MEDAL FOR HER WORK. I BELIEVE IT IS THE BIGGEST EDUCATIONAL STORY IN AMERICA RIGHT NOW.
THE REASON I KNOW ABOUT ALL THIS IS THAT I AM A MEMBER OF THE GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER BIRTHPLACE ASSOCIATION. I HAVE FUN GOING UP TO THEIR PIONEER DAYS AND OTHER EVENTS.
I LIKE TO WALK THE CARVER TRAIL THAT CROSSES CARVER CREEK WHERE CARVER CLOSELY STUDIED BIOLOGY WHEN HE WAS A KID. THIS IS VERY INSPIRATIONAL. CARVER IS DEFINITELY ONE OF OUR MAIN MENTORS HERE AT THE WAS. BEST - RON MILLER, OCT. 16, 2006.

LEARNING FROM DISASTERS OF ANTIQUITY. The pages of the past are loaded with all kinds of disasters. Archaeologists excavate down through the wreckage. I was just reminded of Pompei that was inundated with burning ash and gasses back in 79 A.D. American Public T.V. just had an item mentioning that the anniversary was Aug. 24. The inhabitants of Pompeii thought they were in the clear since they were 5 miles or so away. But, no, they still caught it. When you get the warning, and, hopefully, you do get the alert, take off post haste. You always hear about someone wanting to stay behind in some flood or other disaster, and some resucue people have to risk their lives to get them out. So, if they tell you to go, go.

EARTHQUAKE SURVIVAL TIPS
Here in the central U.S. we have the Center for Earthquake Research and Information at the University of Memphis (Tennessee). We borrowed the following information from their web site.
"WHAT TO DO BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE, AND PREPARING AN EARTHQUAKE SURVIVAL KIT FOR YOUR HOME, AUTOMOBILE AND OFFICE."
Prepare Yourself and Your Family Now
Have an earthquake survival kit on hand.
All family members should know how to turn off gas, water, and electricity.
Plan family emergency procedures, and make plans for reuniting your family.
Know emergency telephone numbers (doctor, hospital, police, 911, etc.)
Anchor heavy objects to walls (bookcases, wall units, mirrors, cabinets, etc.).
Never place heavy objects over beds, and keep heavy objects lower than head height of shortest member of family.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
DURING AN EARTHQUAKE STAY CALM
Inside, stand in doorway, or crouch under a desk or table, well away from windows or glass dividers.
Outside, stand away from buildings, trees, telephones and electrical lines.
On the road, drive away from underpasses and overpasses; stop in safe area; stay in vehicle.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
AFTER AN EARTHQUAKE
Check for injuries - provide first aid.
Check for safety - check for gas, water, sewage breaks;
check for downed power lines and shorts; turn off appropriate utilities.
Check for building damage and potential problems during aftershocks.
Clean up dangerous spills.
Wear shoes
Turn on the radio and listen for instructions from public safety agencies.
Use telephone for emergencies, only.

Following are some notes of my own. Don't foget that a quake(s) could hit in winter. Visualize the worst winter situation and how to survive. Remember, the old residents of New Madrid, Mo. had to go all winter!! The inhabitants just barely regained their equalibrium after one quake, when another big one hit...all winter yet!! It was a series of earthquakes out of hell. I have never heard of anything as bad since. Anyway, prepare all ways for aftershocks.
Here's a tip. Check the camping section of stores.
Also the RV section. Here they have porta-potty supplies
(chemicals to deodorize and disinfect, and toilet paper that breaks down easily, etc.) Lots of good ideas here.
Field archaeologists are used to thinking resourceful.
You can make an outdoor latrine pretty fast. Dig a rectangular pit; put two X poles on each end ---crossed with a pole, which is the seat...and you are in business. And like in the old outhouses, just toss a little lime in after use.
You (we) have got to think field sanitation. Not knowing about basic field sanitation has destroyed more armies than the enemy. Bad sanitation leads to illness. Think clean. Everyone wash up. Keep towelettes around, also jugs of clorox, vinegar, rubbing alcohol,
(hopefully you have water)- if not hang clothes and blankets in sun (ultraviolet from sun kills bugs). The ancient Egyptians used honey on wounds. Sugar works too. It absorbs moisture and germs can't survive in this dry atmosphere. Natives of South America put red peppers in pots of stew. This kills bugs and the stew will keep quite a while in hot jungle atmosphere. For diarriah there is a concoction of saltwater. I have forgotten the ratio used. And there may be one or two other ingredients. Check with some medic. The thing is, diarriah, takes moisture out of the body, and you have to keep adding water.
The natives of Africa jungle have all kinds of eye problems...yet they are surrounded by edible green leaves
(check with an expert which ones are edible). Edible green leaves have Vitamin A- great for the eyes and fighting other ailments. Missionaries come in and give them "golden bullets" which is simply vitamin A. But it is usually all around if you know what to look for. Dr. George Washington Carver used to point out to students in the field that they were surrounded by a supermarket. The rule on edible wild plants is, be sure and have someone who really knows the plant point it out to you.
From long experience living out in the boondocks, you can't do enough planning. A good night's sleep is one of the most important things you can plan for - a good pad, leaves, straw, boughs beneath - and sleeping bags - and mosquito netting if necessary. I notice sports depts. have some great tent buys. You might also ask your pharmacist about water purification tablets. Hopefully, you will have your home after the shaking. If you are suddenly in the boondocks with no home, and, say, it is winter, look for a natural rock shelter on the side of a hill (south side). Caves stay at about 55 degrees all year round. Do as the local Ozarks Bluff-dwellers, erect poles in front and drape skins from poles. The Osage and some other mid-western native Americans made huts by planting poles in a circle, then, bending over to the center. Then, made a wicker framework. Into this was stuffed bunches of dried grass in circular overlapping rows, thus forming a bee-hive structure. Leave a smoke hole in center. And a simple lean to has saved many. Again, you can make one out of thatch and boughs. Eskimos make igloos out of ice blocks. The Mississippi Culture people made rectangular houses using the wicker framework method, then, slapped clay and mud into the wicker. This is called: "wattle and daub." The roofs were thatched. The Arickira, Mandan and Hidatsa made semi-subterranean homes. They dug down 3 feet in a circle. Used cedar poles for walls - extending up about three feet. Four heavy poles were placed in the center of room. Long poles went up from lower walls up past and resting on, 4 horizontals on 4 verticles, up to a point (a hole was left for the smoke hole). Dirt was piled on roof for insulation. A covered entranceway about 8 ft long with a slanting roof going out to entrance. This entranceway faced east. In cold weather they covered the smoke hole with a bull boat. Be careful that a Sioux warrior doesn't drop down the smoke hole and count coup on you! This was known to happen |(see: Tabeau's Narrative of Loisels Expedition to the Upper Missouri.

And, another note on food. There is often creature life in and along streams. Also, rodents store nuts in nests. And the fibers in the nests make good fire starter. A magnifying glass is great for starting fires - focus sun's rays to a point. A bow drill will get a fire going. So will flint and steel. Very dry tinder is important. Know what a flint or chert cobble looks like?
Such cobbles are often found in stream beds. The natives gathered these and cracked them open with another stone.
A fresh chert or flint flake is sharper than surgical steel. Opthamologists have used for surgery on tough eye muscles. There are a number of native tricks for getting foul. Get a little stick pointed on both ends. Tie a chord to center. Put a little bait on each end of stick. Weight chord down with a rock in water, so baited stick is below surface of water. A duck or goose will grab!

LEARNING MORE FROM THE ANCIENTS
I have mentioned a little about the ancients and survival (they were geniuses at it)We would be greatly remiss if on an antiquity web site, we didn't mention some tips from the ancients, who were experts at survival and living off the land. Take the old Bluff-dwellers here in the Ozarks Mountains of central U.S.A. for a good survival example. They knew that one of the best insulators was dried grass (in case you get hit with some disaster in the winter). Leaves are also good for insulation as are pine needles and cedar boughs. You can make improvised overshoes with rags and just stuff the dried grass down inside a "bag like" overshoe. They also knew that bluffs facing south were giant heat sinks that would help warm up their rock shelters (semi-caves). Conversely, north sides of hills in summer were cooler. The ancients were also ingenious at making little (and big) traps. I remember seeing an anthropological report one time (unfortunately have forgotten the source), but it was all very impressive. They made intricate little triggers, snares, and deadfalls. They were brilliant. Don't just stand there, improvise. I mentioned some medical tricks above.
Don't forget that God is always working away for good, healing. You have to know this. Fear is an enemy. I mentioned before, but Pope John Paul II had a motto: "Don't be afraid" said by Jesus a number of times to His Apostles. This is very very healing in a number of ways. And, we all know that about three fourths of the New Testament has to do with Jesus healing. And he told His Apostles go and do likewise! And He healed everything brought before Him. Believe it or not, in the worst scenario we have lots of good going for us. So, cool it and take Godly actions.
